Treat yourself and your wallet at Su on Wednesdays
I was invited at Su in Verdun a few weeks ago to celebrate their 8th birthday. The Turkish restaurant got a complete makeover for the occasion and it looked lovely! Actually the whole area where the restaurant is located was great and reminded me that I need to get out there more often.
For this media event, chef Fisun Ercan opted to serve us the tasting menu which consists of 3 courses served family style. The menu is normally $48 per person however, on Wednesdays, it is available at the exceptional price of $29! Here's what you get in one sitting:
The appetizer course consists of 4 mezes. On that evening, we sampled braised jesusalem artichokes with carrots and oranges, red lentils meatballs with salsa, roasted beats with yogourt, feta and herbs Turkish rolls and zucchini pancakes.
We cleaned the board in a few minutes and every component was amazing. I have to give extra points for the jerusalem artichokes which are usually dreaded by people. I believe they were mixed with preserved lemons and it really made the vegetable shine for once!
The main course or the meat platter includes grilled cornish hen, homemade Lahmacun, lamb meatballs, lamb chop, basmati, pilaf bulgur, roasted vegetables, yogurt and pistachios.
It was fantastic! Chef Fisun Ercan definitely knows how to cook meat and especially the lamb which was to die for! The only other place I have had meat cooked this way was in Moroccan "bbq" restaurants on the side of roads.
The only elements I didn't really care for were the mini Lahmacun. They were so small that they became a little bit too cripsy and dry.
Finally, the dessert course is a small bowl of Lokum also known as Turkish Delight.
It was my first time trying those and I was very surprised by how refreshing they were! It would have been great to have them with a Turkish tea to complete the evening.
Overall, I loved Restaurant Su and the meal was a real celebration. If you have a special occasion or just want to treat yourself on a budget, I would highly recommend a trip to Verdun on a Wednesday. The restaurant is a 10min walk from the metro.
